About this deal

The second half is dedicated to a chapter-by-chapter description of each mountain and what occurred while he and his team were climbing. Not only does Nims have exceptional physical stamina, he's also a leader with great skills in financial management and logistics. He became the first Gurkha to join the Special Boat Service, via a selection process for which he trained with more night runs, gym sessions, swimming thousands of kilometres, going to bed at midnight, only to get up at 2am to do it all again.

I decided to finally get Ed Viesturs book on his 14 summits instead since I know he goes into great historical detail (and I've read all his other books already).

Review: I really like a good extreme sport/survival story and when TLC Tours asked if I was interested in the young reader's edition of this one I jumped at the chance. You read one page after another about how he considers himself super athletic, too good for any challenge, “only having faith in himself”, and “never acknowledging vulnerability of emotions” but not once do you get a detailed account of how he managed psychological challenges and gained better understanding of the world when going through these experiences. It is accepted by you that Daunt Books has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance.

The previous standard for conquering the world’s most dangerous peaks was seven years, ten months and six days. What I found particularly gripping were the rescue stories when he and his team came across people who had been left for dead on the mountains along the way. That's an example to all those who gave up without starting, no matter what are they trying to achieve. Wanting to do what everyone thought impossible, Nims developed Project Possible, a mission to climb the fourteen highest mountains in the world in only seven months, which is seven years faster than the world record. zu Phänomenen wie "Angst" und "Verletztlichkeit" wenig Verbindung hat, aber das mag vor allem durch seine lange Zeit beim Militär erklärbar sein.

My main criticism of the book is that I couldn't feel the mountains in the way that Krakauer does so well in Into Thin Air. Purja is notable for having climbed all 14 eight-thousanders (mountain peaks above 8,000 metres or 26,000 feet) in a record time of six months and six days with the aid of bottled oxygen. He served as a Gurkha and in the elite Special Boat Service (SBS) before leaving to concentrate on his passion for mountaineering and exploration.
